We'll have to go through all of this again in a few years. BYU going independent could make other schools think. I remember when everyone decide that independent was not the way to go and all of a sudden it was basically Navy and ND. Army jumped back into independent status. BYU is going there. Hawaii will likely be independent in the near future. What's to say that Texas doesn't go independent in football and sticks it's teams into some other league? Not saying the money would be better, but it could be interesting to see what happens next. Four 16-team leagues? A few larger leagues and a bunch of independents?
I read an article a few days back by Chip Brown, he was interviewing DeLoss Dodds about the conference realignment talk.
During that time, apparently UT and Notre Dame struck up a bit of a friendship and were talking to each other about what the next step should be. Notre Dame was worried because of all the talks that the Big East would be raided, which would leave them without a conference for their other sports. Apparently, Dodds told Swarbrick that he would do anything in his power to give Notre Dame a home in the Big 12 if/when realignment starts to happen again.

The rumor is that the Big 10 was very close to nabbing ND and Texas together. ND wanted a game with Texas every year (big media market, lots of Catholics and it makes for a more national schedule) and a seven game conference schedule (which would allow for more out of conference games). Things fell apart when it became apparent that UT wasn't going anywhere without a home for Tech.
I wouldn't be surprised to see ND and Texas starting up a home and home assuming they could figure out the media rights.

he also said KU WAS joined to KState at the hip during realignment and that's why we were left out of all the pac 16 talk

I think that even the Board of Regents realizes that circling the wagons isn't going to land either team in a BCS league. That's one positive to take from what happened this summer-- we have a bit of practice going into the second wave of this thing.

We realized last time how unimportant our basketball prowess is in this conference realignment stuff. Some of the best salesman in the world are simply middle men. Why not take this approach and be "helpful" in hooking some hitches together and throw ourselves in as an added bonus. Be a little proactive. If we sit on our hands again next time we will be in WORSE shape than this time.

If they go to 16 team mega conference and drop the NCAA, then basketball will be every bit as big as football. The NCAA currently forces basketball to be worthless because they take all the money.

Does 16 team Mega's automatically mean dropping the NCAA? Is it possible both co-exist?
[/quote]
Lew said something in an interview a back during conference re-alignment that many people in the megaconference talks were considering dropping the NCAA.

The NCAA is not going away in football. All the small schools would cry foul and that would bring the government in to investigate this mess. The last thing that the big time programs want is the government to get involved. It's the lessor of two evils right now.

T-Boone has already started to do this with UT. He's one of UT's largest donors, as well. It isn't a coincidence, either. He's publicly made mention that he planned on strengthening UT-OSU ties with his donations.
With four slots left in a potential Pac 16, OSU gets the nod over us because of these ties.
We might not get our choice in a mega-conference realignment, but we're still one of the last ones picked. With the Pac-12, SEC, and Big 10, you have 36 of the 64 teams. The Big 12, ACC, and Big East have 30. ND and BYU as independents equals 32 teams. Maybe you throw in a few other schools (some Mountain West?, C-USA?). That's a total of 36-40 schools to fill the remain 28 spots. I would like to think we are one of those 28.
