  • Thoughts on the game

I don't want to be labeled a phogger (bashing the team after a win), but I still have some concerns for the season. Webb seems to be a much better fit at QB. He's not the best passer, so he needs to work on that, but he did command and lead the team like a QB should. My only real concern is he telegraphs every play. Just hasn't had enough reps yet to be smooth I guess.

Our secondary played a decent game, but for years they have been our weakness. We got fairly lucky GT thought they could run all over us, and our D line showed that not to be the case. But almost everytime GT looked down field they had plenty of options.

It seemed our LB's speed is out of whack. GT killed us over and over with the option. They flat ran around us.

Don't get me wrong there is tons to be happy about. We played a great game today. Special Teams did a phenomenal job. Our O Line struggled but played well enough for a win. Defense made some tough stops. I was really pleased to see our stupid mistakes nearly go away.

Great Job today HCTG! I give a lot of credit to the coaches for making changes and adjustments not only from last week, but also during the game.

Oh, if anyone has a gif of Webb laying out the GT defender I'd love a new avatar!

Totally agree, what will happen when KU plays a passing team? I personally think KU's defense will be making adjustments all year. The defense seems to have the rare ability to make adjustments mid game to fix a glaring problem. KU had trouble with the pitch to the outside, but eventually stopped it enough times to get thw "W". We had several defensive players go the the side lines with injuries and not return, I hope it is nothing serious. Great win, what a turn around for KU's offensive line and Webb playing the entire game (almost). I hope we can take this show on the road next week. It will tell us if this team is for real and ready to make a dent in the Big 12 North. Go Hawks!

To be fair, when you're playing G-Tech, you overload vs the run and just pray whenever they decide to try and pass

You have to play it that way, you can't play honest vs the Pass or they'd steam roll you for 500 yards rushing

        Agreed.

Against Ga Tech you have to put an extra man in the box and make them beat you with the pass.

Completely agree fellas. We had a solid game plan on D that did very well most of the game. My point is that our secondary regularly got burned. Just a concern for when we do have to guard the pass.

Our defensive play calling seemed somewhat bipolar to me. We had some perfectly called and executed blitzes, however GT ran the same pitch play 3 plays in a row and we didn't pick up on it. In the red zone our defense played a great game, but we struggled a bit when there was a lot of field to use, which to me says we lack some speed.

With all that we had enough to beat the #15 team.... But I am curious to see how it stacks up come conference time. Any thoughts on how we rate against our schedule?

on a few of the drives, Terry was driving me nuts with his coverage of the pitch....he'd have pitch man assignment, and blow it every time going for the QB....they got their first scoring drive by suckering Terry repeatedly.

He at least seemed to learn as the game went on

I thought they made some good adjustments vs. the option in the second half, and forced the pass more than GT wanted to.

As long as Springer is healthy, many things are possible for this defense.

                Re: Thoughts on the game

After not seeing much of the game last week, I was pleasantly pleased with this week. We're not an 8-9 win team. No one thought we'd challenge for the North this year. I just want to see progress from week to week. That was a huge jump in one week, most of it from bruised egos. We should be competitive in all of our games this year.

We'll know what we have for a pass defense this week against Southern Miss. Like others have said, we were keeping people up in the box and were getting burned on over-playing the run.

The running game is 100% better when Sims is in there. Quigs doesn't have a feel for running. He goes where he is suppose to go and isn't super fast. This makes him look like a Gameball running back going up his lineman's ass. Sims moves, finds the hole, and get stuff done.

QB is going to be rough from time to time this year. Webb will get better over time, but he's still a frosh. Pick is very stiff out there, but can do some stuff by running the ball.

I sat with people that attended the NDSU game the week before and were completely amazed by the difference from week 1 to week 2. We've got a long way to go, but I'm feel better about avoiding 2-10.
