  • Memphis to Big East?

    Matt Jones from Kentucky Sports Radio reporting that Memphis will be joining the Big East on Tuesday:

    He's the only one I've heard say anything about this so who knows if it's true or not.

    Honestly, I would like to see Memphis make the jump to a BCS conference. Step up and quite bullying around all those CUSA schools!

      It's an interesting option if they do. Despite what the naysayers think, I would have liked to see them head to the Big 12.

      We'll see if this is true or not, but he seems confident in his source. I've only recently started following this guy, so I've got no idea if he's got a good track record or not.

        Re: Memphis to Big East?

        If memory serves me correctly, the CEO of FedEx offered a bunch of cash to any BCS conference that took in Memphis in this conference reallignment.

        This might be a not-so-subtle admission that the Big East is going to lose another school (most likely to the Big 10). If true, they may be ramping up to ditch the hybrid system and become basketball only. An unstable Big East is the only thing that can shake Notre Dame out of the brush.

        Memphis to Big East, Pitt/Rutgers to Big 10

        -> Big East at 7 football, 16 basketball teams.
        -> Big 10 at 13 teams

        Memphis to Big East, Notre Dame, Syracuse, Pitt & Rutgers to Big 10

        -> Big East at 5 football, 13 basketball teams.
        -> Big 10 at 16 teams

          True or not, these are really important moves if college sports ends up moving to a 16-team, 4 megaconference situation. Every non-BCS team that moves up to a BCS conference pushes out a weak team from the Big 12, or whichever other conference folds.

          I think when I counted last, with Utah moving to the Pac-10, K-State would be the last team getting in to the final 64 teams. If Memphis does move in, that may essentially mean KSU is done, if realignment one day happens.

            all of these "reliable" sources, referred to a press conference happening Tuesday. Has there been any more news, or is this just another dead rumor?

              Sounds like another strike out for the "usually reliable" sources.
