  • Coach K the best ever?

On the cusp of Coach K passing Dean Smith on the all-time wins list I was wondering if Coach K is considered by most to be the best college basketball coach of all-time? I am curious of the results. There are a lot of great coaches not on the list like Phog Allen, Jim Boheim, Jim Calhoun, etc. But for me I think that these five are the best ever. What do you guys think?

I guess being instrumental in getting basketball into the Olympics, getting the NCAA tournament started and starting the coaches association sort of pales to getting American Express ads.

Bob Knight. Probably the best X's and O's and the best academic record of any major coach ever.

On a more serious note, you can make a strong argument that Coach K is better than Bobby and Deano among the recent coaches. Deano is famous for doing less with more than anybody and Bobby couldn't recruit for his last 20 years.
Wooden gets more credit than he is probably due but what he did was pretty amazing.
A lot of the older guys aren't remembered much anymore but they did a lot to make the sport what it is now.
What Phog did has not been approached.

Phog Allen had 700+ wins in an era when teams only played 15-25 games a year. What could the numbers be if he was allowed in a 64 team tournament, and played 35 games a year?

In 14 of Coach K's 30 years at Duke he wouldn't have even qualified for the NCAA in Phog's time.

          Coach K has dominated though.

This reminds me of the annual discussion about who was greater, Jabbar, Chamberlain, Jordan, Kobe or ____(pet player here___).

It's tough to argue against Krzyzewski being at the top of the mountain of college hoops coaches, as it's hard to argue against any of the others.

Phog Allen should've been included in the poll, however. But we know how the voting would've gone if Phog had been included. We're all homers about the guy.

A small disagreement Hoopo, I think that most of the youngun's just think that Phog is a statue.

Sure K is up there but I'd not say the best. Phog Allen has to be up at the top of that list. It's like every coaching tree's deepest roots go right to him.

Aside that it's pretty funny our only coach with a losing record is the inventor of the game. I enjoy telling outsiders this nugget of Jayhawk trivia.

Phog Allen. No doubt. He played when they played Half the games they play today, was forced to retire early because of a Kansas Old Folks law and most of the other most sucessful coaches after him were trained by him.
