  • Your very first game in Allen Fieldhouse.

    Tell us your story.

My very first game was December 2, 1995. UCLA came in, went up early. In the first half they were ahead by 19 at one point. Kansas narrowed the lead down to 15 at half.

In the second half, KU took control, they took the lead with a famous Jacque Vaughn spin move featured prominently in the pregame video. At that moment, after the hundreds of games I've attended since, I still don't know if it got as loud as it did that day.

The Jayhawks prevailed 85-70, outscoring UCLA by 30 in the second half. The Rock Chalk Chant raised the hairs on the back of my neck, and UCLA looked like they were about to cry. Paul Pierce had a nasty alley oop dunk where he jumped over Charles O'Bannon. It was sweet.

I only mention this because tomorrow is the 15 anniversary of that game. A game in which I will be returning to AFH to see the same foe.

The funny thing is, the KU media guide lists the game December 1, 1995. That was a Friday. This game was featured on CBS sports on a Saturday.

The UCLA wikipedia page says the game was at Arrowhead Pond during the Wooden Classic, but they list the game on December 2, 1995, but with the wrong venue. I am absolutely positive I have the day correct.

Someone from the Phog once posted a stream of the game. It'll look for it later.

^^^^ Wow....you picked one of the all-time great games as your first AFH game. I was at the game and it still remains one of my most favorite memories of my time at KU. And, yes, you are right....it was definitely a Saturday game....I want to say mid-afternoon. I remember the sun streaming in thru the top windows when Jacque drove the lane for that awesome shot nearly blew the roof off the old barn.

Unfortunately, I don't remember the specifics of my first game.

First game was sometime in the mid nineties. I don't remember much, I think I was like six.

Second game was in 2004 against Pacific. Got free tickets from some neighbors. They were in one of the south deep corners. I don't remember much about the game, mostly because I have this weird memory that can remember odd details, but not much about the actual events. For example, I can remember us being late and running across the field where the rec center is now. I remember the old concession stands and the old display board. But thats about it.

My first game was my freshman year. 2006 vs. Northern Arizona. We won by 30+, dominated the entire game. Don't really remember much, just that a kid I played against in AAU played for them. He didn't do shit.

        My second game.....Oral Roberts. Terrible.

I went to a game during the early D. Manning years, but I was so young I really don't remember who and when. The first game I actually remember was a KU game at Nebraska during Manning's junior year. We sat way up top and I got to stay up way past my bedtime to go.

I did attend every single game as a KU student over 5 years (4 undergrad, 1 grad).

Re: Your very first game in Allen Fieldhouse.

              I went to KU-Wichita State, January 5th, 1987.

Went with some buddies and smuggled in a bunch of 7oz Michelob Lights in the sleeves of our coats. AFH was only half full, as the team was 6-3, losing to Arkansas, Ohio State and Pitt. Even though team leaders Cedric Hunter and Danny Manning had gone to the Final Four nine months earlier, this team is nobody's favorite KU squad. We sat in an empty area in the northwest corner.

I remember this game totally sucked and I was glad I drank most of the little Mich Lts before an usher noticed us and brought over a trash can for the bottles (thanks, Mr. Usher Guy). It was a defensive slugfest and KU lost, 54-49. Shucking Fockers.

The season limped to a close in the tournament, with Larry taking the team to the Sweet 16, losing to the Hoyas.

don't remember the specifics of my first (i was young)...but i went to a number of games in '78 and '79 when my oldest brother was at ku.

what i DO remember is thinking, "holy shit! darnell valentine is the next michael jordan (whoever THAT is)!!!".....and taking home comically large stacks of plastic ku cups after the games.

I don't remember my first few games in AFH - exhibition games, etc. (WOOHOO EA All-Stars) - but the first game I remember was losing to Iowa to break our 62-game winning streak. This was my freshman year. Jacob Jaacks flipped me off at one point, and I will always hate him until the day I die.

JHawk2001 and I were in the south student section for that game. Most of the Iowa players (and I think an assistant coach or two) were jackasses after their win. I root for their demise.
