  • In this thread we will talk about Turner Gill's Recruiting.

With the obvious need for upgrades in speed and size who does Gill have coming in for next year?

I know of these two verbals recently.
    Alex Mueller, 5-11, 180lbs, K, Grapevine, TX
JaCorey Shepherd, 5-11, 180lbs, WR 3*, Mesquite, TX

    We landed this kid
    Victor Simmons, 6-1, 185, S, Olathe, KS

    Who else we got?

I thought he had 5-6 offensive lineman lined up to come here next year, with maybe one defection presumably due to the number of o-lineman recruited.

What we need is some players. Players that don't piss their pants when they get behind in a game.

We need linemen and we need speed. And we need it fast.

And yes, I just referred to KU football as "we" 3 times. :mexican

we've done well on the offensive side but we need to lock up some JUCO kids to make an impact on D while we backfill. Hopefully we can get the big DT from Coffeeville or wherever.

Who else are some of the targets?

Don't we have some staff who can run this info down? Where's Scotch when we need him?

oh, well. my link doesn't work. The class thus far =

              6 o-linemen
3 safeties - my guess is at least one of those guys will be bulked up to lb
              2 wr's
              1 lb
              1 qb
              1 k
              1 rb

I think we have around 5 or 6 more to give +/- transfers to and from

I doubt we take any more wr's unless they're something special
We may pick up another RB but I don't think it's a priority
I imagine we target DB's, LB's and D-Line for the last few

The JUCO DT in question is Maurice Couch, Garden City. And he'll have 3 years to play.

A kid can play wide receiver in high school and be slotted at another position like DB. I just hope they are fast.

We need linebackers. So many needs.

We're still on Bernard Thomas and sit pretty good with him but who knows how that whole thing plays out. But yeah, I think the area of need is certainly on defense. LB should be better overall with the return of Tharp, Fink and the maturation of Opurum (provided he stays). The only real loss on defense, imo, will be Springer and Laptad; and maybe Harris and OO from a leadership standpoint. We have a pretty decent stable of DE'sl. We just need some meat on the line and some speed behind them.

We've been hurting for defense since 2008.

We don't need super speed. Mortenson, Kane, Reid, Floodman, and Rivera were never extremely fast, they played hard though.

they were good run stoppers, less so in the passing game, but true enough. Like I said, I think we'e OK with our crop of LB's and DE's. We need some legit DT's that can generate some push (extremely hard to come by) and some speed in the defensive backfield. We have a DB roster full of nickle backs. The lack of pressure and lack of speed = no turnovers.

It all starts up front. If you have beef on both sides of the ball, the rest usually falls into place. Nabbing 6 o-linemen was a great sign that we're going in the right direction.

From what I can tell the only other DT we are targeting is Terry Redden (Rivals #37 DT, Tennessee #6). I guess they might be looking into moving some of those OL guys coming in next year to DL.

How often is it successful taking a OL and switching him to the DL?

hardly ever, it seems. I think it's easier to take someone the other way.
