      Re: Fix our special teams

You would preferably have a bunch of backup TE's, RB's and LB's to trot out there but apparently there isn't enough quality depth to afford sticking guys on ST with added possibility of injury.

        Re: Fix our special teams

I feel like a broken record, but most of our problems all come down to a lack of team speed. We can't cover receivers, we can't cover kickoffs, and this will bite us in the ass during conference play. HCTG better have recruited some speed or next year will be more of the same.

Gill has recruited Oline and speed. Thats about it. Nobody knew why he recruited so much line until we saw ours this year.

            Re: Fix our special teams

I have noticed that KU always has really small linemen. I think that Gill is trying to step up their size. I haven't been paying too much attention to speed he is recruiting. We definitely are lacking in that. USM is a prime example of our troubles.

I don't know if team speed is our problem on special teams but I don't know what their problem is. Special teams has been crappy for a while. With the exception of Herford's great year in 2007, we haven't done squat on special teams for years. We were really good at KO returns in 2007 but punt returns were pretty crappy. I am concerned with kickoff coverage and punt returns.

We seem to be doing fine on punts coverage, but Rojas is pretty good and deserves lots of credit for that. We have had 2 punts blocked which is real troubling. Our kick returns are spotty, our punt returns are nonexistent, and our coverage on kickoffs is pretty bad. I guess RHFHO isn't really pumping up the team like the students think.

I think Gill is doing a bit better than Mangino and Co. at placing players at the right positions. What he did with Beshears is really odd, and kinda sad knowing he lost a redshirt for playing like 10 snaps on the wrong side of the ball. Patterson should have been on the offensive side of the ball as well.

As bad as we thought our LB's were last year, it seems this staff is getting more out of them (so far).

              Special team.... hire Ron Prince.

Normally I would agree with you on this.

But watching the other great college teams play this year, and in recent years...they are putting their best athletes out there on ST no matter what their role.

Alabama has Julio Jones on the punt team for example. Richardson is on KO team.
Florida always has their playmakers on special teams. Of course they have so many it probably doesn't really matter.
USC plays their running backs on KO and punt teams.

I think more and more teams are realizing that games, especially big games that will be close are won and lost on special teams. Therefore you play your best players, no matter what to gain that advantage.

I don't disagree with that. My point was only that there is such a drop off from 1's to 2's that we can't afford injuries to the starters. And even then, if the 2's happen to go down we're double fucked.
