UNI had to cut their baseball team either last year or the year before that. They've had some budget issues for a while now because the state legislature is trying to wean all the state schools off of as much athletic funding as possible. Iowa can handle it and Iowa State will be ok as long as they remain tied to a BCS conference, but UNI may not be able to handle something like this. It's a sad situation.

Univ of New Orleans dropped from D1 to D3. That was an extreme side effect of Katrina, but some schools over their head could make similar moves. Big-time-school-wannabes might be facing this issue when they find out that people really don't want to watch 1-AA football or Big Sky volleyball.
