    fucking sucks.

I just got my final bill for them for 1300 dollars. 198 of that comes off for our deposit. I spent 5 hours cleaning the place with my mom and friend. They charged 150 in cleaning charges. They charged 750 for new carpet.

Now what to do? My roommate at the place worked for FM and viewed our file. Our carpet had never been replaced since the place opened nearly a decade before we moved in. It was scheduled to be replaced after the first year we were there. We were there for 3 years so it wasn't replaced. We damaged the carpet somewhat in 3 years, however, 13 years of abuse did just as much. We are being charged for it all even though we know it was suppose to be replaced without our charge anyways. I took pictures of the place after we cleaned it so I have that as evidence and my roommate is pretty close to his former manager and the manager at the place we lived at. Neither work there now and both knew our carpet was scheduled to be replaced regardless. He also claimed that FM will back down by either dropping or reducing charges.

He's gonna call and bitch tomorrow, what other steps should I do if they don't decide to drop the charges? Should I tell them I took extensive pictures and threaten to get a lawyer or just get a lawyer and have them send a letter anyways?

    Again, fuck First Management.

Is First Management a Doug(h) Compton business? Was it formerly known as MasterCraft? I'm so out of touch with Larryville these days...

      Yes its Doug Compton's business.

Kev, sounds like you have a valid complaint. Usually you can find some middle ground without lawyer.

Get a lawyer friend to let you use a letterhead or type up an official-looking one yourself. Threaten to take them to court to dispute the charges and BAM! You'll never hear from them again.

I also forgot to add that the first 2.5 months we were there we didn't have an operable front door, we had to use our patio door. The front door also could have been just pushed hard and it would have broken the wood and opened. I know that there are laws saying they have to secure the property before leasing it out. But I wonder if I make a huge fucking stink that they charged full rent during that time (have pictures of that too), if they will just back out completely.

If you're still a student, go to Legal Services for Students. They'll help you for free (free as in you paid the fee, so you might as well use them).
