LAWRENCE, Kan. -- The University of Kansas is mourning the death of a dance professor who fell from a New York building during the weekend.

New York City police said 59-year-old Janet Hamburg died Saturday after falling onto a construction platform.

After working briefly in transportation engineering, she earned a master's degree in dance from Mills College in California. She joined the Kansas faculty in 1979 and was the longtime chair of the dance program, now a department

It sounds like she suffered from depression. Her partner of 30+ years was diagnosed with some rare, stage-4 cancer a few days before and had flown out to NYC for treatment. Likely the combination of depression and partner getting close to her maker made her jump.

UDK article this morning confirms that she jumped.

Big loss for the dance program here.
