  • Decent off-topic subject discussed in Memorial.....

BillPullman and friends brought up an interesting subject that I think sheould be addressed here

I love this site, and I'm glad that it's still going...however, most have noticed that it's just been dead lately...except for chat....which is great and I love the chat function, but I think it keeps a lot of the conversation blocked off from the people that aren't around enough to participate in every chat

Bill had a great idea that will actually make chat mods useful for something....if there's an interesting topic that stirs discussion in chat, people should also bring it to the board for everyone else to discuss

sweaterbydarwin also made a comment about advertising...what are some ways we can do this?

also, I think we've gotten the phog bitching out of our system....I've invited friends over to the board and they have all made similar comments that it looks like a bunch of high school kids that are too excited about having freedom...now, don't get me wrong, that stuff has it's place...but weird unnecessary anger makes new people skeptical about joining

anyway, what are some other ways we can help this site continue to grow...my main point is that I want this thing to take off

by no means am I trying to take any type of authority position, I'm just trying to get some discussion going

The last thing I want to see are all the sheep KU homers over here. They have zero sense of humor, are not objective, and generally dumb down the gene pool.

We may be better served with fewer boards. Think sports and off topic.

Also, we're only on the cusp of things happening in the sports world.

Start interesting threads with multiple answers, what would you dos, and holy shit look at this! Recipe for success.

But I repeat, bringing a flock of basketball only homers will make this place douchopolis.

The key is good threads. If you have quality threads, posters sign up to interact on them.

There needs to be a game plan on how to funnel traffic here. The typical method is to offer content, but I really don't want any part of this site to be payment based.

I propose a weekly photoshop/ MSPaint thread. It seems to be one of the best traffic breadwinners.

Yes and "look alike threads" against your weekly opponents.

Is it lame and done....yes, but people still look at them.

Agreed. Omit the Ghost Pirates and Other Sports board. When we get more traffic, we can add them back.

The other sites get traffic through the recruiting stuff that is less than useless. We don't have that.

Best to develop utilizing assets, not focusing on what we do not have.

            1. We have a collection of younger posters.
            2. Solid chat feature. Will kill on game days.
            3. Open and has easy access points.
            4. More intimate than other sites.
            5. Seemingly higher life IQ over other boards.

I enjoy what the board brings and we haven't had a sports season yet.

Again, an interesting thought, newspaper article, work place question, or even GASP academic argument comes up, post it and illicit responses.

No Vegas threads and limit the cell phone garbage.

I know Randy is against mods, and i somewhat agree at this point...but perhaps there should be some mod requirement of finding at least one sports story per day or something...I think I remember that was something they did on phog and it'd be a good way to get more sports discussion going

Re: Decent off-topic subject discussed in Memorial.....

Finding content isn't that difficult, especially now that the season has begun. I can try and locate some stories that may be interesting. My problem is that I can't log in at work sometimes.

Also, consolidating the separate sports boards into one big one would help put all the content in one place. We don't generate enough to warrant 4 distinct boards. Nothing kills mojo like seeing 3 current threads on each board.

Again, just good topics that can generate discussion and kill time would help things continue.

this should be a pretty big concern for a board that is looking new members. given my work/life, i generally can only "check in" on the board, popping in and popping out. often times recently, in the middle of the day even, the board will sit unposted (is that a word?) for HOURS while at the same time there are a decent # of users logged on....all in a chat.

it makes me less and less inclined to pop in as time goes by. and i'm afraid a stale board would do the same to any new users (or guests who are considering joining up).

"board-fix" discussion going on in chat now...if anyone wants to talk about it seriously

I agree with JackLord. The daily chats seem to be killing the number and quality of new threads posted.

I think the chat option is great, but we can't let it kill the Mount Oread forum, or the sports boards here.

Re: Decent off-topic subject discussed in Memorial.....

Is there any way we can set up chat for games only? Then any pre- and post-game discussion can take place on the boards.

I'm the same way. Check in occasionally at work, I can't keep a chat window open all day.

not that it makes any difference....but you can "open in a new tab" rather than having a separate chat window

I think you keep the chat the way it is.

I think most of us that use it recognize that it steals traffic. We're trying to make it up in other ways.
