I've actually read some about similar stuff recently. There's some speculation that we're passing through a bubble of highly magnetized galactic gas (local fluff), that is resulting in more solar activity. It's actually one of the few doomsday type scenarios that makes some sense; specifically destruction of the power grid. That would cause serious chaos
