  • Anyone dealt with mononucleosis?

A little background: My 5 year old (the one that had pneumonia last fall) come down with a 103.7 fever last Monday afternoon. Administered Motrin to break the fever and took her to her doctor Tues. morning. She exhibited no other signs of illness such as vomiting, congestion, cough, etc., just the fever. The doc tested for strep and other stuff, but all came back negative. But, her white blood count was severely low at around 300 (it's my understanding a normal adult's range is 4,500-10,000). She's allergic to penicillin, omnicef, and pretty much everything related to them that one would usually administer when an antibiotic is required. She can take oral Zithromax, so they prescribed it to her to boost her system.

Her temp stayed around 100 all week but she never acted sick, and her white blood count rose to 800 or so on Wed. and then to 1200 on Fri. The temp stabilized over the weekend, and was right on the money at 98.6 before she went in for a checkup this morning. Unfortunately, when my wife got her to the doc we found that her blood count had again dropped to 800. She acts perfectly normal, is eating, drinking, playing, and being a normal 5 year old in every way. The only problem is we have to basically quarantine her until her white blood count comes back up for fear of her catching everything she may come into contact with. Obviously she can't go to school and she's already missed a week. I've heard some say it sounds like mono, but the results from the lab work on her mono test won't be in til tomorrow. Anyone have any ideas?

    Signed,

    A scared, frustrated Daddy

If she had mono, she'd be tired, feverish and hungry all the time. At least that's what happened to me when I had it.

    I hope she feels better.

Thanks man. That's what I've heard/read about it as well. The fever is the only symptom she's experienced, so I really don't think it's mono, but I'm ignorant to this kinda stuff. Her doc did say she has seen more cases like hers the last couple of weeks and they just don't know what it is.

The ex works as a nurse in the Children's Hospital. She was mentioning the other day that they were ramping up for something big coming in the next few weeks; once all the kids come back to school.

Yeah, she started kindergarten a couple weeks ago. Hell of it is, I have an 8 year old who is on her fourth year of school and has yet to miss a single day, yet the kindergatener has already missed a week. Go figure.

That is remarkable. I think last year our nine year old missed only 2 or 3 days (for the year) and I was amazed. In years past, she's always been good for at least a couple of weeks off during the year. Always with strep throat . . . . she's got some kind of mutant tonsils or something.

Our 6 year old, in his first year in K, was down for a day or two every month. Quick fever, bounce-back and back to school. Later, rinse, repeat.

                          Re: Anyone dealt with mononucleosis?

Hi. I'm an EMAW, so of course I bang sheep all the time. However, one of them called me on my 90's-era cell phone ("It's still en vogue in Detroit!") today and was like "BAAAAA. PREGNANT. BAAAA. YOURS. WHERE'S MY MONEY BAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA."

Now I'm well aware that this could have been a prank played on me by one of my friends at goEMAW dot com, since that's basically what we do for recreation all the time in Manhattan, but I'm scared that it could actually be real. Does anyone know what kind of illnesses/complications that sheep-man-children commonly ail from, and how I can handle them? Thx

My 7-year-old missed only one day of school last year and that was b/c we were out of town. (this was in early October....had I known that he wouldn't miss another day, I would have cut the trip short so he could have got the perfect attendance award, as he likely won't have another chance). The year before he missed two days of school and those were both vacation days. He had a short bout of the stomach flu but it lasted 8 hours and was on a Saturday. My preschooler didn't miss any school either, but he only went twice a week so it isn't nearly as impressive.

I am sure I am jinxing myself for saying this as school starts next week for us. But this explains why I got so annoyed on that thread a few months ago on TOS when people were saying kids not in daycare when they were young weren't building up a good immunity.

TDH -- I hope you get some answers and that your daughter is able to go to school soon. In the meantime, tell her to stop slipping her cousins the tongue.

My kid sister got it last year and I've been mono free. I think it's because women are the weaker sex. She also had cavities while I've been dental problem free forever.
