  • Topeka just can't catch a break.

Having to battle it's perceived latrine image, now the water tastes like you are drinking out of a latrine. Anyone else in Topeka noticed how bad the water is?

    From cjonline:
"We would like the public to know that while the water does have some taste and odor issues, the water is safe to drink," said Don Rankin, the city's water superintendent.

Rankin and Bruce Northup, water treatment plant manager, explained the details in technical terms.

What is happening, they say, is a slight elevation in the water of two compounds — geosmin and 2-methylisoborneol, or simply MIB to those who know it well. Both compounds are characterized by a slight "dirt," or earthy odor.

Algae blooms being released from Milford and Tuttle Creek Reservoirs are the cause of the foul taste and odor according to the city Water department. Of course the guy from the water department says he doesn't even taste it :o. I thought it was my imagination last night, then I saw a news story about it.

When I was taking my shower this morning you could even smell it. Good times!! Maybe another sign of :locust :locust :locust

Same thing is happening with Clinton Reservoir here in Lawrence; the water tastes organic/silty on account of the geosmin from mass cyanobacteria (blue-green algae) die-offs.

Yeah. Tastes and smells like dirt. So bad just standing at a urinal or in the shower you can smell it.

Hah, I wish. I did a CBA regarding Clinton Reservoir and Lawrence is pretty effed unless they build another reservoir in the next 30 years or a second water treatment plant along the Kaw (it doesn't help that the Kansas River is one of the most polluted in the region). Dredging isn't going to cut it cost-wise over the long-term, especially with the nasty heavy metals and chemicals that will be released if the lakebed is disturbed.
