  • Shrinkage concerns

While ocean water can cause Mr. happy to hide, I'm wondering about the shrinking number of active members here. Todays count is my favorite number, 69, but it seems to be in a continuing downward trend. Is there anything that can be done to reverse that trend? What defines an active member? Or is the "Final Count down" inevitable.

This place was never that big. Sports message boards in general are dying. The older generation are getting married, having kids, and losing interest. The younger generation that would otherwise replace them are just Tweeting instead, or hitting up Reddit. So here we sit, in this valley of dying stars, this broken jaw of our lost kingdoms. No matter, it only takes a small amount of money to keep the lights on.

It is definitely sad, this is the only traditional message board I'm active on anymore...though, even if I didn't have a "job" here, this is about the number of users I'd like to interact with, but I just wish there was more interaction

I know I'm definitely guilty of not providing content, so I'm not blaming anyone...granted, I'd still say quality is better than quantity....a bunch of shitty posts wouldn't fix it

I went over to the phog a little bit ago when there was that little piece of drama with the stripper/porn star or whatever it was, but I didn't like how the board looked and I didn't recognize a lot of people there (no, TheBricklayer, I'm not knocking the phog, it's just not a board I identify with anymore)

As an aside, KU football taking two giant leaps backward, the basketball investigation, and covid was quite the 1-2-3 punch in getting me to lose interest in sports....I still like them when I watch, but, outside of the Superbowl, I can't remember the last game I watched from tip/kick to the final whistle....I just don't have the energy anymore

As the weather get nicer, my brain is telling me to get excited about the Tournament, but I then my anxiety reminds me that KU is down and we missed out on watching last year when we were a much better team

Sorry for the negativity on a beautiful Sunday, I'm just a scrooge

I think COVID and the "down" basketball season has played a role. Basketball season has helped our traffic in years past (we have always had more traffic from November to April) and the lowered expectations combined with COVID has all but ruined this basketball season for me, personally.

I can't help but think polarizing politics has played a role. we just went through a very contentious election.

These things combined with a changing market has probably taken a toll. We don't really get new members, and that's an issue. We don't "advertise" in any way or do anything to attract people to the board. In any "business" or venture involving people, some people will eventually drift away. This board is no exception, and if you aren't constantly creating new, active participants, it will eventually die out. I'm not sure what the best way to "market" the board would be. Maybe Reddit. Maybe we should pool our resources and place an ad on a KU sports website or something.

I've always liked the fact that we don't have several hundred active posters coming on here every day. I prefer a small group. But there are times it's too inactive. If we had between 50 and 100 active posters that came on every day, this board would be much better, in my opinion. We have a lot of posters that post occasionally, but only maybe a dozen or less that post on a daily basis.

You’re not offending me. I don’t have any ownership stake over there! Honestly, I probably would prefer this board, but the reasons I prefer it are also the negatives cited. Smaller group of posters means everyone is more friendly. The more random, anonymous posters you get, the more venom gets spewed and trolls come out. As others have said, politics has permeated all areas now. Not just contained to a simple politics board. Now “teams” have been made and people hate other anonymous people online because of it. Personally I wish wend get rid of and ban all political discussion completely from the Phog. It would help.

I'mma give the San Francisco KU watch group all of the Coronavirus the next time I see them in person, then tell them about this site so they have something to do when they are on the ventilator.

tl;dr We should reach out to the watch party alumni groups if we are going to advertise. These are already people that will dress up in their Beak'um Best™ and drive somewhere to watch a game with other Jayhawk Junkies® when death is not in the air so they might be a good demographic to target.

I missed a stripper/porn thread? Ape Room? I always read the HOAR teacher threads.

                Good suggestions!

Maybe I’ll add this site to my email signature.

I admit I like to lurk on most of the threads. I try to initiate a topic every so often, but I too, have started a new job at the beginning of the year and I'm kind of focused on that (at least until the tradeshow industry opens back up and I can get my old job back). I am way more active during basketball season, but I actually am trying to get more interested in MLB this year, especially since the Whitesox are might win their division and make the playoffs. I was really excited about them last spring before Covid hit and then I lost almost all interest in MLB and all pro sports.

Put me on board with the pleasure of only having a 100 or so people on this board. I was on a Chicago Bears board a while ago and it had several hundred registered posters and it was hard to keep up with all the threads.

I'm very glad I found this site a few years ago. You peeps are fun.

I think we've lost okjay and gooner.

Lurch is still here, so not all the oklahomans got taken out by the february of disaster.

                        It's unfortunate that Gooner left.

Apparently okjay cancelled himself. Sad, but not unexpected in these times.
