  • Onward into 2021 - State of the Wheat

Ok, so, I figured since I had a little time, I'd create a new thread, cause this is kind of confusing and extra embarrassing for me, the accountant (supposedly), so here goes.

I went into the paypal to get the screenshot I promised yesterday (got a new job and am moving, so I have been crazy busy, so I got behind), and I noticed there was an $8.99 charge to our Wheat Account from Scribd at 1:38 this morning

Immediately, I started freaking out....back in February/March I set up a trial for Scribd to see what it was about and ultimately ended up cancelling, I thought.

So, I went to check the transaction history and sure enough, I've been getting charged since March.

I included the bottom line so that everyone could tell there weren't more charges.

I know, you're thinking, what the fuck is this asshole doing using a community account for personal trials?! I would think the same thing. I honestly don't remember what happened, but I use LastPass and I'm guessing it autofilled the Wheat account instead of my personal account.

I was planning on donating anyway, so I upped my donation to $100 to cover my charges and my donation:

So, we now stand at just under $450, which should be good for a couple years :D:

I want to finish by asking if anyone has interest in being wheat treasurer. I thought at the beginning I shouldn't have access to the money, but we were getting things in order and it fell by the wayside.

While my intent was not malicious, that doesn't make it any more acceptable and negligence is certainly not an excuse.

If we do "elect" a treasurer or someone "runs" unopposed, I will give over the login info for paypal and the wheat e-mail, which I would expect the treasurer to change the passcode (I also think we should have someone else in addition to that person, but that's a whole other security issue)

As far as scribd goes, I used a ten minute email to set up for the trial, so I'm currently working with customer service to kill the account which I don't have access to. Any additional charges until this gets resolved, I will cover.

In a nutshell, you all have shown good faith over the years and I'm sorry to say that this oversight occurred on my watch, but that doesn't take away from the generous souls we have here, so thanks for helping us keep the lights on!

Awesome (well, except for the Scribd issue). You've been great at accounting (well, except for the Scribd issue). I plan to cover the renewal of the chat and not ask for money from the pot, so there really won't be much for a new accountant to deal with (well, unless they accidentally sign up for Scribd again).

Ha, I hang my head in shame. I don't even remember what Scribd does/did and I don't remember why I wanted to try it....I actually think I needed it for something video game related, but I don't remember for sure

How many times have you read Treasure Island? Tis the mark of a good treasurer.

A good accountant finds and correct mistakes. Great accountants make sure no one ever finds out about the mistakes.

This scandal could be the end of the Wheat. Not sure how the people’s trust can be earned back at this point.

Also, has anyone looked into tax evasion charges yet? I doubt the local DA would take too kindly to Joe using donated funds for his own personal gain.

Serious question: what kind of security does our software provider give? The fact we are ad-free is something I really love about this place. But I wonder too how “hackable” it is if we ever actually grew.

What would be the value in hacking this site?
