  • Worst Day Ever?

So...I had posted in the Ape Room a while back that I am moving to Garden City (wife's job - I'll be student teaching). We only had one opportunity to come out in May to look for a place to live. We didn't want to buy (for reasons too numerous to post), but had some difficulty finding a place to rent that will allow our dog.

Well, we found a place. A place that was going to need some work, but had a lot of promise...3 bedroom house with hardwood floors. The landlord had a laundry list of things that he was going to get done, replace...looked very promising, and again, we didn't have any other options.

He told us originally that it would be ready to move in on July 24th. Then he called that week to let us know that it would be another week. We booked our rental truck, packed up all of our stuff, found some family that was willing to help us move, and drove out to Garden City. The place isn't close to finished, or suited to be lived in (in its current state). Landlord said he thought we could "work around each other" until it's done...completely unacceptable. We have a full truck, and are in a hotel room looking through every source to find another rental. The child starts daycare on Monday, and my wife and I start new teacher in-service on Wednesday...what a freaking day. I can't even imagine that this would be "one of those days" that we'll look back on and laugh...it really blows.

Wow, that's fucked up. Sounds like the new landlords at the apartment complex I used to work at. Forced out the old landlord, who was very popular with all of the residents, and are now pretty much running the place into the ground. It's a mess.

Hope you can find an alternative quickly.

Did the jerk who told you you could move in on July 24th do it in writing?

Nope...there was nothing in writing, and we also have not signed a lease yet, so that gives us an out. We're going to spend the day looking for a place that is move-in ready and hope that we only have to pay one day extra for the rental truck.

This really, really blows. Packing up until 11:30pm on Friday, cleaning the old place, then driving across the state sucks hard enough. To arrive at the destination with nothing there...

Yeah, that totally sucks in just about every way imaginable.

When dealing with landlords, or prospective landlords, I always get everything in writing. Often I offer to swap phone numbers and ask "Do you get text messages?" I found out that SMS messages are considered written communication by legal authorities during landlord-tenant disputes. I've found landlords are much more responsive if you send a text rather than make a phone call.

          Good luck. You're due some.

It's also given him the out that has put you in this situation to begin with.

I agree with Poopo. Get it in writing. Start insisting on that often enough and they'll realize that you're not the sort of tenant to be trifled with.

What a suckass situation. Alas, as pissed as you are now, this WILL be something you look back on and laugh at one day. It could always be worse (although it does sound like it sucks balls right now).
