Easy Company's William Guarnere, 88, told the AP today: "When he said 'Let's go,' he was right in the front [...] He was never in the back. A leader personified."

Always sad when a good soldier gets his final DD-214. He's earned his rest.

On a side note, I really wish the Army would go back to the Pink and Green 1945 Uniform and Service and Garrison caps (like the second photo), if for nothing else than tribute to guys like Winters and the rest of the most God Dammed of God Dammed Men. Leave dress blues to the prima donna squad at Arlington, and leave berets to the boys who earned it.

Men and leaders of his caliber are few and far between.
