• R.I.P TV

I need a new tv. Stat.

When I tried to turn on my tv earlier tonight to watch the game, I was met with this on my LCD tv.....

According to the peeps in chat at the time, I am fucked.

So...any sites you all can recommend for the best deal? Any good Black Friday deals anyone knows about? I think we'll stay the LCD route and probably go with something around 60 inches.

After 3 hours of vehement denial, it finally came out that my 7-year-old got pissed during a particularly heated game of Harry Potter on the XBOX and threw his controller at the tv. (he did, however, just offer me up his life savings to the tune of $5 to "pay for part of the new tv").

It should also be mentioned that my husband has been known to throw various instruments across the room while playing Guitar Hero or Rock Band. To his credit, he has never thrown the guitar AT the tv, though. Where do kids learn these things?!?!

I am now shopping online for tv's. While drinking.

Re: R.I.P TV

There've been some decent deals on Amazon.cm Goldbox and Woot.com in recent weeks.

If memory serves, Best Buy usually has a great deal or two for Christmas season. But that's still a bit off. I saw their Sunday circular and there were some okay deals in there.

Jason will know some good ones when he shows up.

LED beats LCD but price wise, you can probably find a really good deal on a plasma screen. In any case, check Crutchfield's outlet and places like Frye's and NewEgg. You can probably also find good deals on open box demo sets in stores. Just make sure you get them tweeked before you bring them home b/c the settings will be all jacked.

Just wait a little bit and stalk the SlickDeals and FatWallet forums. Usually you can get a feel for the price points that way. Once you learn what is a good deal and what is not, you'll know what to pounce on. Black Friday often brings about door busters, but typically you can find better deals on the net if you're patient.

Also, can you type out Sam's list of promises?

According to the peeps in chat at the time, I am fucked. Yes, but now you get a better TV.

I think we'll stay the LCD route and probably go with something around 60 inches.LCD/LED go to 55", anything larger and you miss the economies of scale and your price will skyrocket.

I am now shopping online for tv's. While drinking.I suggest NOT doing this. You may get addicted and end up trading TVs out like Evolvehawk swaps phones. That is, you'll have a new one every month.
If you want the cheapest TV, do what Evolvehawk said and hit Walmart. Although you might die by getting trampled.

Otherwise, it depends on how much you want to spend.

I'll just say this about Walmart's Black Friday TV's. Many of them are clearanced TV's that are simply packaged in holiday boxes to get out the door. Depending on the model, you *might* be getting an upgrade on your old TV, but chances are it's a year-old model they're just trying to get rid of to make room for the newest ones.

Of the possible TV's you might find at Walmart, stay away from everything but Sony's, LG's, and Samsungs.

As long as we're on topic, the "name brand" TVs at Walmart/Target/et al for Black Friday are always stripped down versions of the normal product, common examples being:
• [li]Only 1 HDMI Port
No ethernet port/internet streaming[/li]
[li][/li]

I don't think you can buy better quality for the money than a Vizio! I also have a Vizio BluRay with Wifi. It's a beautiful thing.

Re: R.I.P TV

Thanks for all the replies. I just talked to my dad, who happens to be a tv whore. He said he saw a 55 inch Sony LED for $1250 last week and has seen similar deals out there. He also has a membership to some Best Buy frequent buyer club and said they are having a members only sale a week from Monday.

I hate to say it but I think we are going to have to re-evaluate where we put this tv. With 3 boys in the house (4 if you include my husband), I think we need to mount it up on the wall out of reach. This saddens me as we just bought a new entertainment center this summer.

Ok, here is Sam's list of promises that he wrote out while grounded to his room. I love how all of you without kids were so amused.

1) Get a hammer and break my piggybank and give the money to mom and dad. (I think he just wants to be violent with a hammer)
2) Give mom and dad my $5 bucks
3) Do chores for 2 weeks (as if this is an option anyway)
4) When we get a new tv, be grounded for 2 weeks (try 2 MONTHS, buddy)
5) For Christmas with my own money get at least 5 presents for mom and dad ( I thought he was giving us all his money?)
6) Don't throw stuff
7) Don't hit people
8) Stay in bed all night
9) Do extra credit chores
10) Don't lie about stuff
11) Don't write on dresser (he got in trouble for this four years ago...I guess he still carries around the shame)
12) Clean mom and dad's bedroom (no idea where this came from)
