Austin is one of my favorite cities in the US but I would choose Mexico. The beach > Lake Travis.

The only exception would be if the travel time leaves you substantially less time in Mexico.

Mexico, hands down. Although all those places you listed suck. Go to Ixtapa and stay away from idiots as much as possible.

Again, as Ono said, where in these locations, also very important. If it was some random hotel in PV or Cabo I didn't know anything about, I'd say Austin. If it was the places I know down there, I'd say Cabo first then PV followed a distant third by Austin (no disrespect Austin, I love you, but you're not a beach and margarita location and that's hard to overcome).

We just flew St. Louis to PV. We took off just after 6:00 am St. Louis time and were on the beach, drink in hand by about 12:30/1:00 PV time, and that includes a 20-30 minute shuttle ride to the hotel (but we also gained an hour). We were there four nights but three would have been fine as well.
