    Restaurant = always 20% never more never less
    Haircut = if I don't do it, $5 every time...not much, but I get a buzz cut...it's easy
    Sonic = LOL

    You won't tip less than 20% even if the service is terrible? I'm generally in the same boat but I will tip under 20% but takes some megashit service.

      WTF? When did 20% become the standard tipping amount? Great/good service gets 20% or higher. Average service gets around 15% and if you're totally fucking terrible at your job I might tip 10% or less. Tips are not guaranteed, they must be earned.

        I thought standard was 18% these days

        20% is just easy math

        I can imagine really bad service might get me down below 20%, but I've never seen it

          If they suck, I tip nothing. I've got no problem reminding them that they have to work for a tip.

            Good for you. People that tip 20% no matter what are lowering the standards of service by rewarding a shitty effort.

              I guess I don't really know what bad service is....as long as my cup's full and my food doesn't take an hour (which wouldnt' even necessarily be their fault) I'm happy

              I don't need conversation from my server

              also, dollar/drink at the bar if paying cash

              20% if I have a tab

                I will leave a lower tip than the standard for bad service, I will never leave without leaving a nominal tip, but I don't just blanket give 20%.

                I think it is crazy to leave a crappy waiter a 20% tip if he sucks.

                  I drink a lot, and my cup gets emptied often

                  if that bitch runs dry but I don't have to wait too long for refills, small tip

                  If I have to ask for refills or hound another waiter/waitress, they get a quarter...literally, 25 cents which is even worse than leaving nothing imo

                  If I never have to ask for a refill, it's refilled before it's empty, and they're on the ball....I have no problem giving 18-20% standard

                    Re: Tipping Practices

                    20% for average service, higher if good. I worked in the industry and realized very few of the problems ever result b/c of the server. They often put way too many people in the server's zone, or the cooks suck ass.

                    3-5 for a haircut. My hair is short and takes about 20 minutes. You don't deserve much more.

                    1 dollar for sonic, no matter how much or little I order... I have a friend who judges them on their looks then decides to tip.

                      That's the only way to do it at Sonic IMO. Spangles is another story. I tip my balls off to everyone in that motherfucker because Spangles really is just that fucking awesome.

                        Really disappointed in this thread. Thought it would give me some good advice about cows.

                          Damn you, 42. I was reading through this thread hoping that there wouldn't be any cow tipping posts. 8 minutes too late, I see.

                          I am usually a generous tipper. That being said, I've given low tips or even refused to give tips if service is bad. My wife helps determine what is good or bad service - she was a waitress through college.

                          I once wrote on the receipt, "Don't watch Lakers/Sixers highlights when your table is waiting for its check." The guys was literally parked in front of the TV instead of looking after his tables...

                            I like the way you say "worked" as in past tense, I saw you at McDonalds last week.

                              Re: Tipping Practices

                              I have no problem tipping well...if the service is good.

                              If its bad service I will tip some tiny terrible amount. I won't leave nothing, but rather something like 45 cents or something like that. Its worse to do that.

                              Haircut gets 2-4 bucks, depending on how they were. Sometimes I don't want to talk and the bitch won't stop. Sometimes I want to. It only takes about 20 minutes so I think its fine.

                              Sonic gets zero.
                              Subway, or other places like that, they might get the spare change if I pay cash, otherwise nothing.

                              And at the bar its different. If I'm just getting a beer, you're getting a dollar for every couple I get. I'm not giving a dollar for you to grab a bottle and open it for me. If I'm taking shots or drinking mixed drinks I'll go a dollar a drink. I usually spend more money when I open a tab, but I tip less because it comes out to way less than a dollar a drink.
