Hopefully it's not that serious, but you hate to hear about stuff like this.

I wonder if it was Fiji Island. That was always this time of year and they brought in those pools for it.

    I hope he is ok.

SHIT! This is/was my house. I am sure it was Fiji Island. I really hope the kid is okay. I knew it was a matter of time before this happened. Still, when I was there, nobody would have dreamed of "diving" into those pools, they are only about 3-4 feet deep.

so he dove into a pool they had to bring in? Those pools are like a maximum of 4 feet deep, the shitty little ones arel ike 10 inches. I'm not bashing frats, but how stupid does everyone in that house to have to be not to stop a freshman from doing something retarded like that?

They don't bring them in, they literally build them. They use thousands of 80lb sandbags and build pools that are about 100 feet by 60 feet.

It is really a freaking cool party, but I have never seen anyone "dive" into the pools before. Everyone knows you don't do that. This will be the last one, that is for sure.

Drunk stupidity is all it is.

I won't even say its just frats. Its everywhere. People are getting more and more retarded every year.

You just see more stuff like this at frats than other places because they are large gathering spaces. And you hear about it more because there were more people there. And they have a bad rap.

My nephew (brother's kid) is a freshman at KU and is friends with this kid from high school. I guess he broke a couple vertebrae and lost feeling in his lower body. Fortunately he didn't severe his spinal cord and my brother said they think he will be all right in the long run. He has a long road of recovery ahead of him and probably will not be back at school this year. Hopefully he learned his lesson.

I realize that kids are going to dumb stuff, but you have to wonder what some of the older brothers were doing at the time.

probably the same thing the SAE guys were doing when their younger brother died

I know this stuff happens everywhere, not just frats...but if I saw a kid getting ready to dive into a four foot pool I would go far out of my way to prevent it from happening

drunk off my a$$ or not

that frat deserves every punishment they get

Supposedly they are looking at this as hazing.

Phi Gamma Delta is now officially suspended.

if this was because of hazing then the leadership in that house is even more stupid than I thought previously.

If they forced someone to do this as hazing, they should be forced to do the same

that said, I don't believe that's what happened

Re: Injury at the FIJI house

Some (not all) fraternities do some stupid things to their freshman. I've got a student in class that is required to wear collared shirts until he is a full member. I understand that those who have been Greek think this helps the new ones learn to be a part of the group, but it's just dumb. If Greek groups did a better job of following their pillars, every single student would want to be a Greek member.

I'd also make all freshman Greek men live on campus and not in the halls. That would reduce some hazing and help them improve their chance of being retained.

Come on, quit apologizing for frats. There's a far higher proportion of stupid shit involving alcohol and Greek brothers than the normal college student population and alcohol.

You know it's true. When was the last time a non-Greek KU student died from alcohol poisoning? I can't remember any, over 25 years around the Hill. But I can recall a few frat deaths. How is that acceptable?
