  • AMO: Cars

I'm posting this on TOS and here as I know some posters don't overlap and I'm hoping to get as much input as possible before I make my decision.

This may seem like a dumb question with an obvious answer to some but I'm going to get some outside input anyway.

I currently drive a 2009 Toyota Camry. I have the option to get a 2010 Chevy Malibu with only 6k miles at no cost to myself.

I need to make this decision in a timely matter. Any input is appreciated. Thanks in advance, y'all!

This thread is being met by a barage of one stars on the phog. My thoughts? Paperwork sucks. Stick with the Camry.

Free is free...if you're paying for the Camry, this seems like a no-brainer.

I'm not paying for the Camry currently. My dad helped my grandpa pick out and purchase the Malibu last November. He drove it to Luby's and Kroger... And that's pretty much it.

As my dad is the executor of his estate, he's offered me the brand new Malibu and he'd trade my Camry and my moms SUV in for a new one for her.

I drove it from his house to the hotel today and it seemed to drive pretty nicely. It also has the option for OnStar & Sirius radio. At dinner tonight he made this offer to me and told me to figure it out so we can make arrangements ASAP.

Oh and chemhawk, that's nothing out of the ordinary. Afterall, I posted it.

As a former used car salesman I would say the new Malibu is a fairly equivalent car to the camry. My question is are they similarly loaded?
How many miles are on the camry? Assuming the Camry has quite a few
more miles, I'd take the Malibu every time, but especially if it's loaded. Is it an LS, LT1, LT2, LTZ? Need more info!

The cars are the same color (dark grey). Camry has about 36k miles on it I think. I used to drive a lot I guess given that I put the first mile on it. The Malibu has nicer (chrome) wheels. It has black seats (not leather but the sportier "cloth") vs. light grey cloth seats in Camry. Option for OnStar and Sirius (he had it for a couple months). My Camry is an LE. As for actual model of the Malibu, I'm not sure. I'll have to investigate when I go out to the car tomorrow morning

With clothe seats it's an LS or maybe an LT1. Wow, the mileage difference is pretty significant. I assume your issue is how long they will last. The Malibu has 2 years less miles and is a year newer. The new Malibu is a very well built car, and should last nearly as long as the Camry. Another thing to keep in mind is maintenance will be cheaper on the Chevy. I still say the Malibu.

I have an 06 impala with 127,000 on it. It runs like a champ. I would go for the malibu. Let me add that I love my car. It drives and rides like a dream.

                    Re: AMO: Cars

I assume that the warrenty on the Malibu will last longer than the one on the Camry. Just something to consider.
If the values seem to be pretty close then just pick the one that fits.

                      Re: AMO: Cars

As I said on TOS, go with the Malibu. It's a better car to drive, has equivalent quality, better warranty, and lower miles. And no lime stains on the rear bumper, of course.

                        Re: AMO: Cars

Both are excellent cars, but why not go with the newer one with lower miles? I've had excellent luck with Toyotas, but Chevy's quality is very good these days. I rented a Malibu when I was in Florida last year and found it enjoyable to drive and of excellent build quality. I was pleasantly surprised.

I drove a 2010 Malibu for about a week in Florida. I was really impressed with it. I would go with the Malibu if it was me.

Thanks y'all. I'm taking the Malibu. Now I just have to arrange getting it from Houston to Tulsa.
